Kids can make any, or all, of these cards out of basic craft supplies, including construction paper or colored paper, and markers or crayons. They’ll also need a pencil, scissors, and white glue or glue sticks.
Shirt and Tie Card
What’s more classic for Father’s Day than a tie? This clever paper card uses simple folds to make a shirt. Kids can use decorative paper, like scrapbook paper, to make the tie, or they can decorate it themselves.
- Fold a sheet of white paper in half widthwise. Crease the paper, then unfold it.
- Fold the ends of the paper over to meet in the middle. Crease them well.
- Fold the upper corner of each half of the paper over at an angle to make the shirt collar.
- Draw a tie, about 6 1/2 inches long, colored paper and cut it out.
- Glue one side of the tie to one side of the center of the shirt, just below the collar. Leave the other side unglued so that the card can open.
- Write a Father’s Day message inside the card.
Computer Card
For dads who love to play on the computer, this card has an important message. Best of all, it isn’t e-mailed, it’s delivered by hand with love!
- Cut a piece of dark colored paper, about 8 1/2 inches square, for the monitor. Cut a rectangle of dark paper, about 4 1/2 by 8 1/2 inches for the keyboard, and a smaller rectangle, about 2 1/2 by 3 1/2 inches.
- Glue the long edge of the small rectangle to the center of the bottom of the monitor and the center of the top of the keyboard. Let the glue dry, then flip the computer card over.
- Draw letters and numbers on the keyboard, or use letter and number stickers.
- Cut a piece of light colored paper, about 6 1/2 inches square. Glue it to the center of the monitor.
- Write a Father’s Day message on the monitor, such as “You have 1 Father’s Day message: I love you Dad!”
Coffee Cup Card
This cheerful 3-D card is perfect for the dad who needs a morning cup of coffee to start his day. When served with a smile, this home brewed card could perk up his Father’s Day even more than a double espresso.
- Choose a piece of colored paper for the background, and a contrasting colored for the coffee cup.
- Cut a piece of coffee cup paper about 4 inches tall by 9 inches wide to make the coffee cup front.
- Fold the short ends of the paper over about 1/2 inch, and write DAD on the paper in large letters.
- Cut a piece of coffee cup paper about 4 inches square to make the coffee cup back.
- Glue the tabs on the coffee cup front to the sides of the coffee cup back.
- Cut a strip of coffee cup paper about 1 inch wide and 8 inches long. Fold each short end of the paper over about 1/2 inch.
- Glue the tabs on the strip to the inside of the top and bottom of the coffee cup to make the handle.
- Glue the back of the coffee cup to the background paper.
- Draw a sun on the background paper (or make one from pieces of yellow paper).
- Write a Father’s Day message on the card, such as “You brighten my day!”
You can simply hand these cards to Dad on his special day, or you can sneak the shirt and tie card into his dresser drawer, place the computer card on top of his keyboard, or surprise him at the breakfast table with a special cup of coffee card.
